Having ridden my motorcycle here through my first autumn-winter every day (almost), I think I can provide an outsider’s perspective to the question, “what’s the weather like in Ireland for biking?” If you want the TLDR version, it is bloody challenging.
When I started considering returning to motorcycling in Ireland, one of the factors I needed to consider was the weather. You can read what I think new motorcyclists in Ireland shouldn’t do. As a cyclist and a pedestrian, I have experienced it for over a year and was well prepared for what to expect. Ireland is well known for its unpredictable weather, with rain, wind, and misty conditions expected throughout the year.
What’s the weather like in Ireland for biking?
So what does this mean for motorcyclists? In this article, we’ll explore the weather conditions you can expect when motorcycling in Ireland and some tips for staying safe on the roads.
First and foremost, it’s essential to acknowledge that the weather in Ireland can be challenging for motorcyclists. Rain is common throughout the year, and the country is known for its damp and misty conditions. This can make the roads slippery and reduce visibility, making staying safe on two wheels more challenging.
Motorcycling gear for Irish weather
With the right gear and mindset, it’s possible to enjoy riding in all weather conditions. Just buy good effin waterproof gear. And do not bring summer gear to Ireland. It is just not needed.
A good-quality rain suit is critical gear for riding in wet weather. I bought myself decent riding gear, which while not waterproof, was plenty water-resistant for my riding. This will help keep you dry and comfortable on the road, preventing you from being distracted by the elements. You’ll also want waterproof gloves and boots to dry your hands and feet.
Helmets and Pinlocks – Don’t get one without it.
In addition, investing in a fog-resistant visor or what is known as a pin-lock visor for your helmet is a good idea. If you cannot see where you are going, it is a sure-shot recipe to go off the edge in misty conditions.
Adjusting your riding style to suit the weather in Ireland
In addition to gear, adjusting your riding style to suit the weather conditions is essential. When wet or misty, you’ll want to reduce your speed and increase your following distance to allow longer stopping distances.
You should also avoid sudden movements and braking, which can cause your bike to lose traction and skid. Instead, focus on smooth, steady movements and take your time to navigate corners and bends in the road.
Another factor to consider when motorcycling in Ireland is the wind. This can be incredibly challenging for riders, particularly on open roads and motorways. In strong winds, your bike can be pushed off course, making it difficult to stay in your lane and maintain control. To mitigate the effects of wind, keep your body low and close to the bike, and avoid sudden movements or over-correction. It’s also good to stay alert to other road users, particularly larger vehicles such as trucks and buses, which can create wind turbulence as they pass.
