Race report: Hill climb at Nandi hills

Highlight: Exciting hill climb at Nandi hills that even featured a F3 car for the first time.

“What a day!” day. When you call a day, ‘a WAD day’ you usually don’t need to specify more.

Got up early in the morning and got ready to go to the Hill climb that I thought I had missedsome days ago but which had been postponed. Adrian, Danny and myself went to Nandi Hills, where the event was being held and had lots of fun. The ride as usual was a blast, doing something like 120kmph with Danny behind me. Unni came in to drop Danny off and headed back to office, only to catch up with us again in the evening.

Oh! I got a new set of foot rest rubbers today since the old pair had been so worn out by scraping that one had fallen off somewhere along the way. Anyways it had been long overdue to change them, had bought a pair like 9 months ago. So, some peg scraping along the way and already the bottom of my new set of footrest rubbers are rough. Got knows how many days this set will last me.

The hills were pretty crowded and did not allow much fun riding, but there were some hot bikes out there. And of course cages with motors were there to compete in their own class too. Three or four imported bikes were all that were there this time. Not a single imported Yamaha took part in the meet. Only a Dragster had come in, with the owner bringing it in just for showing off nothing else. A 2 stroke 400cc Suzuki, a Honda VFR 800, and a Honda CBR 600 were all that went up the slope with a purpose.

This event was organised by Jagat Nanjappa’s Universal Motorsports Club and there were 2 main highlights of the day, one was Jagat himself and the other was a Formula 3 car that MRF had brought in just to spice up the event. Jagat was his usual happy self and I like the man for his racing skills. But I guess he’s getting old. 🙂 On his way down the slope when they were not doing any racing and the roads were open for general public, he banged head on into an esteem coming up through a blind right hand hairpin. He escaped any serious injury, though the car had some dents. Had it been one of those jerks that keep riding up and down just to show off, without understanding the danger involved, we might have had serious injuries or maybe even death at the event. The moment he hit the car, he jumped onto the top of the car and escaped. Pretty interesting, eh?

Then came the turn of the Formula 3 car. From where the start line was some 7-8 curves down the hill we could hear it idle. And when it came up the slope full blast, I can’t explain. We were like 6-7 feet from it, with nothing in between us and I was clicking photographs as fast as I could. After it had gone by, we had a very interesting discussion about the fact that, if the Indian F3 car made us feel like this, imagine an F1 car. The very thought was and is orgasmic.

The F3 car broke the 15 year old lap record of Bobby Jayaram that was set in the then hot Cosworth engined rally car. The F3 car could manage a time only 2 seconds slower than that time. Expected a time much faster than that and was surprised to see such a small gap. The times however, were slower this time round overall.

3 RDs took part in the competition and they flew pretty well. The fastest were Joe’s bike ridden by Jeevan and Nissar’s bike ridden by Shabbir. The other RD was ridden by someone and the bike was in a stock condition looks wise and had been lightened up by removing a few accessories and adding a steering dampner and the like. Other than this a few factory Shaolins, a TVS Victors that were slower than Hero Puchs, Fiero’s and a host of Yamahas. RX100s, RXGs, RX135s, RXZs all were there.

No much booze for me, since I don’t drink Rum and there was no beer. So kept off it. Danny and Adrian finished like ¾ of a bottle up in the hill itself.

On the way back, stopped over at Empire, had a lot of chicken, ghee rice and finished dinner. Unni joined us there and was pretty green when we told him of all the fun that we’d had.

All in all a great day!!

Thanks to Adrian for the last two pictures below.
